Backlog Roulette - Playing Doom Series(Ultimate Doom)

Post by Fragems »

Finished cataloging my collection on RFgen finally and figured I would make tackling my backlog into a game itself.

The setup is pretty simple. Using a random number generator I will select six games from my collection. I will then knock off my two least favorite games from those which have been selected and put the four remaining games up for a vote. Whichever game wins the poll I will then play through and do a video review of it. Basically rinse and repeat after that and maybe in the next decade or two I will have put a good dent in my backlog  .

Basic Rules:
1. I have to at least play the game for 2 hours or through a full loop. Mainly for arcade style games.
2. If I hit a game that is part of the series I may play through the entire series.
3. If a game that is a compilation comes up I will play every game in the compilation at least once.

Reviews:
Coming Later

Gameplay:
Ultimate Doom

Agreed. The first two, at least, are essential.

you know you could just use the "pick a random game" tool on RFGen too, right?

Consider we're approaching October, the Doom, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Condemned series are all good choices to check out. If you want more old school FPS action, then Doom, hands down, though the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is one of my favorites from the 2000-2010 decade, and Call of Pripyat is the best in my opinion. I also enjoyed Condemned immensely and consider it one of the best games on the 360.

In short, I can't decide between the three. Sorry I'm not much help!

Holy crap I had never seen this before!

I clicked it and got Formula One World Championship: Beyond the Limit on Sega CD.

I think I'll pass.

Thanks for the heads up thought I remembered something like that but couldn't find it earlier so I just went the random number route. Will definitely use that in the future :).

For anyone who doesn't know where it is just go to your collection page and hit the tools icon next to FAQ it's on that page. Took me a sec to find it.

Is there a way on RFGen to mark that you've beaten and completed stuff or otherwise remove them from the roulette feature?

Also...why is this in the Videos subforum?

There is a comment section for each game where I can mark them as completed. If they pop up again I can just have it pick another game at random.

Put it in the video section because I plan to do video reviews each time I finish a game and figured I might as well post it here instead of making a separate thread later. Also might do some streaming as well.

Since Doom has a pretty firm lead and I had some spare time I went ahead and started on Ultimate Doom just finished the first part "Knee-Deep in the Dead".

Ended up playing it on the Xbox since DOSBox kept throwing fits on me and I didn't feel like fiddling with it. Kind of glad I went the Xbox route game handles very well with the Duke controller :). Really nice that they bundled the old games on the Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil disc.

So far the game is awesome. They did a really good job creating a quasi 3d environment. Aside from a few awkward moments when it is hard to see enemies below or above you the game looks and feels great. While i did get lost a time or two the level design is perfect for run and gun and usually loops around so you don't stay lost for to long, and if all else fails just follow the stream of things that you haven't killed yet  . Was also surprised by the amount of jump scares that happened while I played more then once I found myself dropped into a swarm of enemies unexpectedly.

Only thing that bothered me was the dark areas with flashing lights man can that ever give you a headache fast.
