I actually know Michael personally (he lives in my area). He's a very nice guy, very much into obscure consoles and very much into C64/2600 era homebrews.

As you will find in his interviews, the guiness world record process is a real pita to go through and he is very happy to put it behind him.

The most impressive part of his collection to me? He has ever single Jaguar and Jaguar CD game ever domestically released (and most foreign ones too) CiB and in damn near mint condition.
He's also a VG history professor at Canisius College up here and his courses have been fairly successful.

To look at where his collection is stashed and how it's organized, you'd never believe it's the world record... that's for sure. He's been lucky in his travels (and line of work) and was collecting before collecting became a huge thing where everyone with internet access all of a sudden thinks their Madden 2002 is worth a fortune... That sadly, is just the reality the rest of us have to live with :)

Cheers to Mike though, very nice guy, very hard working and a swell guy to converse with about the games of yore.

"I probably get three hours of playing in a week," he said. "If I'm lucky."

That's a shame.

Awesome, I knew I liked this guy :)

You should send him an invite to the forums sometime, cha cha.

He's not a forums type of guy, I think

He also takes up to 2 weeks sometimes to reply on whether or not he wants to hang out or not. Truth be told and to touch on the quote Stark put up, the man is quite busy. He is a regional manager for Gamestop, a dedicated Homebrew developer and promoter, a history professor, writer, an avid game hunter and a dedicated family man. He truly fits the definition of "having no time".

I feel bad for him in a lot of ways. Maybe I can coax him into a interview or something though :)! I feel like he has a lot of stories that would be highly relevant to the interests of a retro community such as this.
After the holiday season concludes, I'll see what kind of time he'd have to maybe do a Q&A thing on collecting, homebrewing and retogaming here. No promises of course, but can't hurt to ask him.

He'd make for a great guest on the RB podcast!

This collection is worth ZERO ... video games cannot be traded like a stock. If there are no buyers ... there is nothing of worth. When people begin to comprehend this FACT, perhaps they will stop collecting stuff spend their money on food and insurance instead of toys.

I got a good laugh out of this comment.
