Of sonic or mario 64? I'm probably not the best person for the job, since I don't have either console anymore and must rely on emulation. (Even if I did, I still lack a quality capture card right now). But I could still see what I could do on the emulation front. I've played the games enough as a kid to have the legitimate sound effects engraved into my brain. Let me know.

I doubt there is anything wrong with their capture cards. Gamespot, on the whole, has been taking some quality shots from current generation consoles. Unless they handed off the responsibility of the Wii capturing to some crack-smoking monkey in a basement, then I hardly think there is a hardware error, or a mammal error. I mean, it's possible that the VC games are of lower priority, and are being capturing on some ancient PCs in their office. Hell, IGN revived their Dreamcast section, and started taking new screenshots from the old games, and for some reason, the picture quality is terrible in most of them:
