That's a pretty wide breadth to choose from. I mean, I'd recommend Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and King's Field: The Ancient City. But chances are you'd hate those. So tell us some JRPGs you enjoyed on other platforms to give us an idea what you like.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories, Persona 3 and 4 are all really enjoyable games!

Re: PS2 RPG's
My favorites: Star Ocean 3, Wild Arms 4, Final Fantasy X12, Dark Cloud 2, Xenosaga, Ys The Ark of Napishtim, Grandia 3, Dragon Quest VIII.
I usually prefer the games that don't have random battles except for Dragon Quest, but that game is such a classic I'm glad I took the plunge.

If your into the Shin Megami Tensei games they are definately worth checking out. Most of the PS2 titles got massive reprints and are still available over at amazon for sub $15 new.

Re: PS2 RPG's
I haven't actually played too many PS2 RPGs, but Ar Tonelico is one of my favourites (and apparently the second is better, which I haven't played).
And I haven't played much of this since I have trouble with the battles, but Way of the Samurai is pretty interesting.

Suikoden V
if you can afford it.
The first Dark Cloud is nice. Shouldn't be that expensive?
Ditto on persona series
too good and a lot of copies out there.

I don't have a lot of experience with PS2 RPGs, but Persona 4 is a must play. Gauntlet Dark Legacy and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance are great, too (though Dark Alliance 2 is rubbish IMO).

This game is so rad. I'm five hours in, and I love it despite its flaws.

The pacing on Dark Alliance II is a bit off, but it is considerably lengthier than the original. I also thought that the environments in Dark Alliance II were more varied, and I thought that the boss battles were more exciting. After we played through it together a few years ago, my wife ended up preferring it. (I still prefer the original, but only slightly.)
