Anyone worried about PS3 online / updates ?

It doesn't seem like the PS3 will lose it's online capabilities anytime soon. I'm sure Sony will keep PSN up for PS3 as long as they can make money from it. But at some point, sooner or later, the PS3 will lose these online capabilities.

My concern is simple: What will we do for game updates?

Consoles like the PS2 and Wii have a huge and amazing library. I can acquire new games for years to come without worries. The PS3 on the other hand, I feel like you might get screwed. A lot of games are released with serious bugs and glitches, some games are released with day 1 updates to fix major problems. A lot of games have minor to major updates to fix problems.

Since the PS3 also has an amazing library, I'm just worried that after the servers go down, I might get a new game and not be able to update it. I have a bunch of PS3 games that I've acquired but have not yet played. I feel like I wanna install and update them, even though I'm not ready to play them, just so I don't miss out on any important updates if they exist.

What do you guys think?

At the point that the system no longer has online support, I will just softmod the system and update the games that way. The .pkg update files are all over the Internet for almost all the games, so I am sure it won't be hard to do.

I did this last year with my PS3 library. Fortunately not everyone (mainly Sony pubished games) required a full install so i was mainly making sure updates were downloaded (including checking for updates on my PSN games).

I was going to mention this possibility. Being an illegitimate way of doing it, there's no guarantees. I can only hope this is an option. At least, that's how I look at it.

the minute I get a new ps3 game, it goes right into the system.

Then it downloads the appropriate updates and stuff.

Plus it helps that I got a Terabyte in my PS3 when I upgraded it.

So as long as the harddrive still works I'll be okay.

Still got plenty of space in it.

But like others said, I'm sure someone will find a way to update games when there's no longer support for PS3.

My one (game) victim of updating is DC Universe Online. FTS. Legit 24 gb needed for the updates, which took forever to DL in the first place. Just didn't have the room.

I just realized that the Wii U is kinda in the same boat. Most Nintendo games don't need huge bug fixing, but a lot of them have updates that add features to the game. I don't currently own a PS4 or Xbone, but I'm assuming they're the same as well.

That's another good point. HDD failure could make a lot of your library unplayable. Or, at least, not play as well.

I worry about it every time I have to delete a game file from the hard drive in order to make more room. Whenever I do it and see text like "version 2.01" or whatever, I think "damn, what's going to happen in x number of years time when there's no PSN and I go to reinstall a game?"

I guess, like Bogus mentioned, soft-modding would be the option.

The other concern is also hard drive failure.

Another good practice is to obtain the "definitive" versions or later print runs of certain games. A lot of times these come with the patches on the discs.

Perhaps we could start listing the versions of games that we know for a fact are fixed on PS3/360/Wii.

Most likely, it'll turn into a need/desire to run system backups from time to time.

Having a working HDD in a PS3 is easy, since they can use off the shelf hardware. It takes a -long- time, but Sony did include a system backup utility in the OS as well to facilitate swapping drives.

It'd be important to do in case your console died too, since you can't just put one PS3's HDD into another PS3 (without formatting it), nor will the restore utility import the data (only works with backups, at least last I've used it).
