Dualshock 3 Consumer Alert. The Fakes are getting good.

by 01toubib Sat Sep 06, 2014 2:44 pm

So I bought a DS3 off Amazon New. I have had good luck in the past with Amazon as they are pretty good at weeding out fakes. However, this last one I got is so good I couldn't even believe it was fake for a while. I had to really compare it to me other DS3s to find out. (Also after playing it the Six-Axis is terrible, and there is lag on the d-pad buttons)

So which one is the fake?

If you guessed the one on the right you would be wrong! The PS3 classic white is an old school looking white, like PS1 Slim white. However, not everyone buys white controllers so hopefully I took some photos to help those find, spot, and report fakes. (I'm serious report fakes! Especially the ones that try to pass as real DS3s)

How to spot a fake rule 1: Check back labeling.

Real label: Has FCC labeling
Image

Fake Label: Has BS Compliance standard labeling
Image

Also note, model number doesn't even match model number on the box:

How to spot fake rule 2: Fakes are bad at the painted add on labels.

Real Controller: The Dualshock 3 and Six-Axis logos look professionally done.
Image

Fake Controller: Dualshock 3 is a mess of fade and smearing, the 3 is the worst it's italicized and smeared, the six axis logo is faded.
Image

Real Controller: PS center button looks like this. (Also note Sony, Start, Select are matte not matallic, but that will vary by controller color.)
Image

Fake Controller: PS center button isn't as defined. Also Sony logo is not center and wrong color.
Image

How to spot fake rule 3: Indents on the back are too sharp.

Real Controller: Barely can see the indent on the controller number labeling.
Image

Fake Controller: The rectangle indent is noticeable from a mile away.

Other things to note:

This box is 90% of the time a fake: Sony hasn't used this box in ages.

If some how you manage to find a deadstock of this box, it looks like this in real form:

Also, my fake controller came in not perfect condition, there was a noticable scratch and some dirt on the side. Sony OEM almost never has any these things happen in new controllers.

Pass this info along, hope it helps. Tons of sellers these days are passing off these fakes it's sad really. Keep your eyes peeled

Wow crazy find. Can you report stuff like this to Amazon? In your case, the proof is totally in the pictures.

Yea I reported it to amazon. I was pretty upset. There top seller of controllers is selling fakes as well. It's a complete mess on that website of fakes.

 That would be bad. Thankfully I know the one on the right is legit. If it were fake it'd be a perfect clone though and then I'd give up.

Edit: You were making a joke right? Bc you have given me a heart attack. If this one is fake I'm in a heap of trouble.

I wonder if they're out there for PS4 and Xbone now, perhaps.

I think it's luck either way you cut it though. I bought a wired 360 controller last year that's definitely legit, and right out of the box the right trigger gets stuck sometimes when it's pressed. Terrible. Hoping to replace it with an Xbone controller sometime since I hear those work with PC's now.

Off topic but do you have any idea if the shoulder rumble from the xbone controller works on pc? That's pretty much the only thing that I've seen about the controllers that I'm in love with.

Wish I could say, I have no idea. I'm also not even sure if Xbone controllers come with a USB cable or not?

The 360 controller is one of my favorites, but I think they somehow made it even better with the Xbone's small differences. I like the softer triggers, way better D-pad, and everything else is just ever so slightly improved.

Yea I haven't really been able to try one out besides in stores and that kind of sucks because you can't tell the weight of it or how comfy it would be to just hold like you normally would.
