PAL PS1 games at 60hz

by Sato Wed Aug 27, 2014 5:17 pm

I have a few PS1 games that I'd like to play at their full speed and resolution. What options do I have available? I currently have a PAL non-modded PS1 (not PSOne). Is there a way to modify it to run games at 60hz, or no? If I import NTSC games, will they play at their full speed/resolution on a region-free chipped PAL PS1? Or the opposite, if I import an NTSC console and chip it, will my PAL games run at NTSC speed and resolution on it?

Sorry I'm writing this kind of hurriedly, but thanks for any answers!

This was a while ago, so I don't remember clearly... There was PAL PS1 game that I wanted to play on my NTSC console. I have a chipped console, and I was trying to play a burn of it. When I tried to play it, I just got a bouncing image. That tells me that the game was coded for 50Hz, regardless of what region the console is. There was some auto patch tool that I found on the web to patch PAL games to NTSC and vice versa. I patched it to NTSC 60Hz and was able to play it.

There do seem to be a few patching tools out there, but if I wanted to only use legit, non-burned games, is there a way to do that?

If there's something in the game code that has to be patched, then there's no way around that. If you don't wanna play burns, then you'd have to import the games.

Or, I'm wrong about something...

The PS1 is "told" by the software whether to run in 50 or 60hz mode, so there are not hard mods for the console to force 60hz.

Even in a NTSC console that has been chipped, your PAL games would run at 50hz.

NTSC games will run at 60hz/Fullscreen on a modded PAL console for the same reasons.

Ah, I thought that was the case. I wanted some one else to confirm. I'm not big on PS1, and much less stuff to do with PAL.

So like I said, you'll either have to patch the games and play burns, or import NTSC copies of the games you wanna play. Of course, if you're gonna play a burn, you might as well just burn the real NTSC version instead of patching it (unless it doesn't exist) since the auto patch is not exactly perfect.

So importing should be fine? I'm okay with that. It's a bit of a shame as I finally have some PS1 games I want to play, but they're all PAL so I'm more than willing to sell them and buy NTSC if it means a better experience.

Ps1 should be cheap enough to import from any region.

I've also burned PAL ps1 games to see if they work in a chipped US system. They dont.

Just remember to get all the proper plugs for it. Dont make it any more harder.

Ps1 should still be plentiful.

The NTSC version will run just a bit better frame rate. However, there are PAL games that did not get a US NTSC release or just might have extra features. Maybe have both a PAL and NTSC console if you don't want to do the conversion?

If you want to try the conversion, search in the Guides section of this Forum. I posted a a complete PS1/PS2 PAL NTSC Conversion Guide with various games I personally have converted.

As long as you chip the console so it can play imports. Either that or a GameShark if you have an older model (IIRC, the GameShark will let you boot imports).

Or make it easier and just import an NTSC PS1 as well. They can be had for very cheap these days, especially one without any hookups or controllers or anything.
