From what I've read Ground Zeroes isn't really all that connected to MGS, other than references to Peace Walker - so I don't think there is much reason to feel guilty.

There is a pretty large time game between Ground Zeroes and MGS. However, GZ only references MGS3, Portable Ops, and Peace Walker because those are the only games that have existed by that point in the time line.

I thought that this game was supposed to butt up against Metal Gear 1?

By the end of The Phantom Pain it may well tie right into Metal Gear. Ground Zeroes is just setting that game/mission up though, starting with characters and setup from Peace Walker.

I played through most of the series before MGSV came out. I played them in this order:
MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, MGS:PW, MGSV:Ground Zeroes, MGSV:PP. I'll play Revengeance later after I beat PP.

My favorite games are the new ones. I really enjoyed MGS2 and MGS4 though. Those are my favorites so far. I really hated all the Big Boss games up until GZ and PP. I could not stand MGS3. The open environment was not well done at all. There was lots of annoying micromanaging stuff that was not fun in the least to do. I didn't find enemies interesting at all. Where MGS2 was smooth and everything loaded fast and had a good feel, MGS3 was clunky and awkward. The radio transmissions were a bear to listen to because there was always like 3 seconds of silence at the end of each sentence.

I felt the same about PW. The story wasn't all that interesting and the mechanics were awkward on the PSP. I might try again on the PS3 if I ever get one of the collections.

MGS2 had one of the best stories. Its a shame it got such a negative backlash. MGS4 had a pretty good story and the gameplay was amazing compared to the other titles. All in all I had a great experience playing through them and the new game really does take things to a new level. Its a shame the series is coming to an end.

I wanna love Revengance but can not get past the worst lock on in gaming, game is also super creepy tho. They really need to release Metal Gear Acid's on PSN for the Vita!

Besides the Originals and PS1, I jumped back in with Ground Zeroes which I played through and now wanna run through the others.

Currently doing this myself. Going chronologically so beat Snake Eater (great game), Peace Walker (great game) and Ground Zeroes (great demo masquerading as a game). How handy that Phantom Pain just came out. ;-)

Honestly I think people would do well to play Ground Zeroes before the Phantom Pain. If you don't you'll get over it but basically it sets up the Phantom Pain and is definitely a prologue.

Basically I love MGS1, MGS2 was meh for me, MGS3 was a good game, and The Phantom Pain is doing its best to make me hate it, although I love how the game plays, it's just everything else is shit IMO.

Being almost finished with MGSV I'm actually looking forward to 40 min long cut scenes in MGS4. They're like two polar opposite games.

EDIT: I'm also currently in the middle of playing the original Metal Gear on the HD Collection as well. To be honest I like it for what it is. Very easy to pick up and play. Plus it's just wild to see the characters in this setting/under these circumstances.

Any advice on how i should go with MGS 4? Played like 4 hours and not sure if i should go guns blazing or sneaking since i dont feel neither of them to be engaging. Im glad that i can see Maryl again tough. And i just want to hear that over the top Liquid again.

If you aren't feeling it then don't play it. I didn't like the whole stealth thing for years then came back to it. You have to be in the mood for it.
