Best of Series: Tomb Raider
Re: Best of Series: Tomb Raider
So I guess in hazy sober stupor I bought the PC version of the new TR on amazon for five bucks. I haven't really played all that much really, just the intro/tutorial, but I really like it so far, already a lot more then Uncharted since the main character doesn't come off ass a pompous ass. I'm wondering does the game open up and you can explore the island or is it sort of an on rails type of thing where you are ushered through everything from corridor to open area to corridor again?

a little of both actually... You are free to explore parts of the island that you have already been to/through, going back to complete challenges and hunt for loot and what not. But the game story does usher you through area by area as you beat them. They cleverly lock out areas you are not able to go to though, it's never just an impassable invisible barrier preventing you from leaving to an unexplored place.
Keep going with it, top notch adventure game imo!

You can fast travel between the various locations using the campsite/save areas. While many of the locations kind of have a linear layout there is still alot of stuff to explore as well as collectables to hunt for.

Re: Best of Series: Tomb Raider
I just played 1 and 2 for Playstation for my first time. I had played Legend, Anniversary, and a lot of Underworld (forget why I stopped Underwold) and always thought they were great. So I went for OG Lara and wasn't disappointed. The controls are very mechanical but manageable. 1 wins over 2 mainly for it's focus on tombs and such. 2 was good with all it's keys and parts for things and such but by the time I got to the ancient places I was almost a little tired with it. And way too much shooting at shit and getting shot at. It got annoying. 2 did have more complex level design which was engaging. But always "not a tomb, etc"
It was my intention to play through the original 5 back to back, but I think I'm gonna hold off on 3 for a while. I owned it as a kid but just used cheats and followed the strategy guide and whatever. I'd like to actually play it.
OP have any luck?

actually I still didn't get around to playing this game mainly because I got it on GOG and waiting to buy a new laptop to play it. The problem is I have heard the games do not work with modern controllers.
I could buy them off PSN but then I would feel I have wasted money buying the GOG ones. I just played other games on my backlog (and still not done with them!) but this game is on my list of "must plays"
Re: Best of Series: Tomb Raider
I brought the original Tomb Raider when I purchased a Saturn in 1997 and although it didn't have the thrills of Daytona CCE, I loved the sense of exploration and isolation. It was hard though and I still haven't completed it. It's still one of my favourites in the series.
Anniversary is a brilliant update and is wonderfully reimagined. And it's far more forgiving. I recently completed it. I don't understand all the hate it has gotten in this topic. It's a great entry point to the classic series, which controls a bit clunky these days.
I've only just started playing Legend and while I'm enjoying it, I feel it lacks the isolation of the original. Plus, since when was Lara such a gung-ho people killer? Still it's a great game.
I love the 2013 reboot. The story is really engaging and so is the gameplay. I'm dying to play Rise of the Tomb Raider but sadly the PS3 port was cancelled and I won't be purchasing a modern console any time soon.
