I agree that component cables make the image slightly better even in 480i mode. The only problem I have is some games it puts these clear vertical lines across the screen. Its mostly during FMVs but sometimes during gameplay. If I put the TV in normal size mode they are not as noticable.

I got a couple sets of PS2 component cables from Monoprice a while back. They're cheap and they work. Anyone looking might want to check if they still stock them.

Never seen this, LCD or CRT? Maybe test a particular game using the component cables and with 480p mode turned off.
If you still get that vertical line effect the cables might be bad or maybe the connections-switchbox?

CRT and how can the cables be bad when its only some games most of my games look fine? Ys during fmvs and Xenosaga the whole game are two of the games I see it in.

Okay so the cables are not the culprit. Perhaps your TV stretching the screen to fit? Do you have a LCD?
Is it widescreen? The reason why I ask is this is the first time I read of Component causing the vertical lines.

If I read Wiki right, the games in question don't have a 480p mode.

But just in case; Did you try the troubled games with Component and 480p turned off?
Also in S-Video or Composite with the same result?

Don't get me wrong I believe you, a screenshot to help your description?

I popped in my copy of Ys and I see what Peph is talking about. Every 5th or 6th pixel column is doubled. That has nothing to do with the cables. That's either a poor implementation by Sony for stretching full screen video playback for non 4:3 screens or laziness on the part of the developer of the same thing. They could have done some sort of filtering which would have made everything a little fuzzy, given black bars to people using a different aspect ratio, or doubled some of the pixels to stretch things out. Unfortunately they went with the worst option.

Yeah but I can still see it when in 4:3 mode, its just not as noticable. If you have Xenosaga ep I try that one too. I get thoes clear lines in that one during fmvs and gamplay, its less noticable during gameplay because of all the white.

@CRTGAMER
As I said before its a CRT, it is also widescreen. With regular composite cables you can't see it. Just search google "PS2 component vertical lines" and others also mention it, but all they say is turn rgb off.
