Everything down to the level design feels so very similar to Bioshock and vice versa. Shock 2 is probably my favorite of the games because I'm sci-fi biased, but heck yeah I love Bioshock 1, 2, and Infinite as well.

How is the first game? I always hear people praise System Shock 2, but I never hear anything about the first game.

If you love cyberpunk and hacky gadgets the first System Shock is the best. If you enjoy cold sci-fi and survival horror System Shock 2 is the best. I personally like System Shock 1 more than System Shock 2, because I love cyberpunk and SS1 is all about it. It even has virtual reality hacking dungeons. Don't get me wrong though, SS2 is fantastic as well.

The reason you don't hear much about the first game is a simple one. Most people avoid System Shock 1 because its user interface is intimidating as hell. But after you get used to it, it actually makes a lot of sense and is a breeze to use. And I'm saying that after beating the vanillla original version, without even the mouselook mod added.

A company called Night Dive is working on System Shock 1 remake that is supposed to be much more streamlined in the user interface department, so maybe after it's released System Shock 1 will finally be embraced by the masses.

Elkin, Exhuminator basically answered the issue I had with System Shock 1 above. Sadly have to admit I haven't played much of it or gotten into it. My fault with it doesn't even make sense to me, considering I played a ton of Ultima Underworld and loved it, which is more archaic haha.

I plan to check out the enhanced edition someday and I'm also pretty excited for the remake. I'll laugh if I end up liking it more than SS2, though that's an extremely tall order.

I think SS1 has a better atmosphere than SS2. When the remake comes out everyone should play it.

According to the new HG101 article on the entire DE series, not really.

But thanks to that, I did get aware of one of those modern graphical upgrades for the original DE. I might have to try that next playthrough.

Liking the first game seems to be something for the Unpopular Gaming Opinions thread here at times, but I'm reminded of the good conversation here in this thread. I'll always love DE. That's never gonna change. I will also play the sequel since I did get it on sale @ GOG.

You guys know whatsup with the transparent blue menus/hud in this article? I like that better than the standard gray. But Ive already spent time googling hud mods and all I found were improvements made by other mods and I don't recall seeing that transparent blue.

That should be in the standard in game options.
