N64 portable commission completed

by bacteria Sun Sep 28, 2014 12:56 pm

Not doing another commission until mid-end of 2015, however had been working on this system for a few months and finally finished it with a video.

What makes this system different is the lithium camcorder battery packs are interchangeable and also there is a screen protector made which integates with the system.

Made this for a guy in New York.

Really slick! I like that the outer surface of the unit looks like a matte texture, for comfortable grip. The 3DS XL (for example) has this bizarre smooth plastic on its backside that I find really uncomfortable to grip. I don't know if it's just me, but it feels so weird on the fingers that I had to find a textured grip surface to put on the back so that I could actually play the thing. I also love, love, love the hot swappable dual battery, that's wild. That should now be a standard feature on every portable! :)

The one question I'd have for you is that you indicated that there is no volume control because it had been set to an optimum level for the speakers...is there a headphone jack or mute switch then? I could imagine a lot of scenarios where the sound might be a hindrance.

Usually there is a volume control on a portable for the audio and also headphones, and TV output and sometimes multi-controller ports and also screen brightness buttons.

In reality though, one tends to set the volume to one level (as I do with even PSP, NDS, etc) and leave it there, don't use headphones as demotes game playing enjoyment, never used TV output from a portable, portables are one player and anyway, multi player on a small screen is not a good idea, and once you set the screen bright and contrast you don't change them; also with a car reverse screen tilting the screen a little makes it brighter or darker a bit due to the low viewing angles.

Couple the above with the fact more controls makes a system look untidy, and also not easy where space is at a premium, there is no point adding features you don't need. Large speakers would need volume control for sure, but small speakers have a bit of a sweetspot with audio.

The textured finish not only was handy to cover blemishes in the case making but also yes, nice comfy grip too.
