I'd check craigslist. Any city that I check video game listings in (I check quite a few, my friends are always willing to indulge and shop for me) has people offering PS3 downgrades (I assume that's what you're after -- downgrade to 3.55 so you can install CFW)

Alternatively, you MIGHT get lucky and find a friend who hasn't used theirs in a long time -- when my initial CFW PS3 was stolen in a breakin, I mentioned needing "an old PS3" at work and a coworker was like "Ours hasn't been turned on in 2 years" -- sure enough, it was on 3.41. I was overjoyed, and she got some money so I assume she was happy too. Win-win.

But yeah. Best bet will probably be craigslist if you don't want to invest in the progskeet/e3 flasher to downgrade it yourself.

I thought it mostly involved a specially set up thumbdrive?
I never cared to do it, but is the process more involved than, say, a slim PSP that's up-to-date?

If your PS3 is still on FW 3.55 or lower, it's basically the same as doing it with a PSP. If your PS3 has went to a higher FW than 3.55, then it's more involved because it requires hardware mounting.
