Thanks for your thoughts. As my original and subsequent posts suggest -- I hated the thing at launch and never liked it. I had hoped that it was merely a matter of selecting the wrong games... there are enough suggestions in this list to try a few more, but overall, most people seem to echo the dissatisfaction.
Its also true that 3d games do not age as well as sprites, for the obvious reasons. But on the other hand, I'm also surprised at how good and playable many games of that time are -- albeit, not on the N64. I still regularly play many games on my PSX and Saturn -- they've held up remarkably well.
Super Smash Bros I'll check out.
