My vote is 100% on soft modding. I also heavily recommend the game Super Gussen Oyoyo, which I accidentally found and played through when checking the emulators om Wii

I see a lot of older guides for modding, but what's the best current resource for learning how to do it?
How much time should I estimate to spend on the process?
I did still pick up the Super Mario All Stars disc, but this could still be a fun project.

I use the "Letterbomb" method. It is very simple, and even your first time shouldn't take more than half an hour or so.

Re: Best Way to Play Mario Classics Legit, Cheap, w/ Saves
I just softmodded my original GameCube playing Wii because the kids (9, 8, 6, 3 and 3month) kept ruining discs. The older kids are good about carefully switching discs but sometimes don't put them back and the younger ones get their hands on them or spin them like they are a DJ in the case. Needless to say after ruining a couple Gamecube and Wii discs I softmodded the Wii. To keep it legit I used the Wii to copy the discs to a USB harddrive. Now our whole collection is on the HD and I don't have to worry about the kids scratching Metroid Prime Trilogy, Xenoblades, or any of my GameCube games if I accidentally leave them in the system.
The Wii in my bedroom has been modded to play ROMs and it is nice, but if you want to stay legit and keep your discs safe - I would softmod it (using the letterbomb method mentioned earlier) and then you can just rip your purchased games to a HD or flash drive like I did for my kids.

I would agree on softmodding. Instead of using Snes9x I would create, or download an All-Stars + World Virtual Console Wad and install that. I find Snes9x for Wii has a few frames input lag. Nothing that would bother you when playing an RPG or something, but its pretty awful for platformers. Also the colors on SNES9x are a little oversaturated it seems. Plus it would be a lot easier to boot, and since this is for your kiddos thats always a nice thing.

Wii U virtual console. It's legit and it has save states.

I don't typically get newish systems. I got a PS3 for a Blu Ray player that happened to play some good games (mostly the digital remakes or indie Releases). I have a 360 that was gifted but barely used.
