Finally all 8 Game Boy Wizardry entries are in English...

Post by Exhuminator »

As of two days ago, a fully playable English patch of Wizardry Empire: The Staff of Resurrection was released:

http://www.romhacking.net/translations/2322/

This means that now all 8 Game Boy / Color Wizardry games are available in English:

http://www.romhacking.net/?page=transla ... order=Date

I took some time this morning to put together all 8 games into a prepatched package for myself. Meaning one pack with all 8 ROMs prepatched into English. I figured other people might want that too, so I thought I'd share here. AFAIK this is allowed on Racketboy. If it's not, I prefer to be flogged by Ack:

That file contains these games:

All in English!

I suggest playing these on your smartphone via an emulator.
If you've got Android I suggest this one:

Hopefully these will get translated soon too:

Fascinating, for sure. Snagged while the link is up. ;)

The one I've wanted to play through is Wizardry I-II-III on SFC. The artwork is just so great! But it's also really, really hard. :P

Cool stuff! Hail Japanese Wizardry!

Just what is that game anyway? It didn't get a physical release, nor was it a Satellaview game as far as I know. I've never seen a repro cart. I've only played the ROM. So what was the originally release?! I is stumped!

It came out on a rewritable cartridge called the Nintendo Power (ha!) that was available in Japan.

Neat!

Got a Question though:
How concerned should one be playing a bunch of Wizardry on flash memory? I've not delved into the madness of this series too deeply, but from what I gather, it permanently saves your file after each move (as in each step taken).
I might just be a little paranoid about write cycles. I had a similar concern with Fire Emblem, but that should be fairly tame by comparison.
100,000 write cycles is a lot, but a single hardcore session of Wizardry could very well get up into the 1000's.

I think putting them on an older GBA cart would be fine, as you would need to exit/restart to save the ram file. Maybe on a DS flash cart too, as I think it only writes the save when you exit to the emulator menu (or via designated update button). Not too sure on the PSP or other handheld ones, there might be an option for either option depending on the emulator.
Definitely not throwing these on my GB everdrive though.

I think your last three images are misordered; it should go Proving Grounds, then Knight of Diamonds, then Legacy of Llygwhatever, as those are the first three Wizardry games.

Does the GB-ED actually write its saves to memory card every single time the SRAM is updated? It's probably more like the Everdrive-N8, which keeps the data in RAM, and writes to SD card upon reset or power-off/power-on.

In other words, you're probably just fine.

On Famicom, that IS the order that they were released. Not sure if it was the same with the Game BoyColor releases. According to gamefaqs, they had a simultaneous release date but kept with the same (mis)order as the famicom.

That's a relief then. I haven't really even used the thing yet, so wasn't sure how that worked.
