Is it worth $10 if I have never played Gen 1 or is it just going to be too primitive?

Just get fire red or leaf green and call it good. The originals, while classics, are extremely slow paced and primitive.

It is going to feel primitive, but I still think it's worth a shot.

I would say save it at least for Red and Blue, but not yellow.

Yellow stands alone as a unique one despite not being that unique. Thank the anime for that one.

I don't remember all the changes but the vital ones I'll list
- Start with pikachu
- Will pick up and not deep into it, all 3 starter pokemon (R/B you'd have to trade for them)
- Team Rocket -- kick their evans, koffing, and meowths ass for amusing sport repeatedly
- Redone gym master behaviors in text and visuals to match the cartoon
- A few other balancing things, including output of pokemon in various regions.

It's a great catch all title as you can wrangle a lot of good stuff in that one.

Yellow also has some touch ups to sprite work and a better color pallet, on the 3DS VC release the game is not in black and white like Red and Blue are.

Plus you have pikachu sprite following you around the entire game.

Well that game was a weird one. It had it's own color code setup for it, yet it was the last official original Gameboy cart too and also therefore the last Super Gameboy title as well as far as the NA market goes. I'm not surprised they wouldn't white wash it in a no color mode like the older duo.

Yellow is great, but you definitely need to play at least Red or Blue. Not both since they're the same just with a few different pokemon, but even if primitive and slow paced, it's a great experience that you should at least try.

I'd almost recommend yellow over RB just because from what I recall the pokemon in RB don't really look like pokemon at least pidgey doesn't(he actually looks like a pigeon from real life...not a bad thing but would've been nice if they'd put it closer to the anime in graphic style). Heck though if you have FR/LF those would be better(almost regretting selling mine which got lost due to being new to shipping >_>)

You're right about that, it's what I kind of got into with the list. They redid the sprites (not the sounds other than pikachu going PIKA) so it would match all the early merchandise and TV show. You're losing nothing playing Yellow but gaining the real roots of where they ironed out the finalized format of where they'd start from going forward. RB(G in Japan) are pre-cursors, rougher around the edge but not much, and visually it doesn't fit as well with the existing games from Yellow forward. But you have to accept it was a learning game, a crap shoot into the dark hoping it would take off and make some money. No one knew the fad to be would die off as a fad and live on capturing more than one generation now that it's 20 years old. You've got people who started on RB/Y who now have their own kids playing the 3DS and DS iterations as their first. In a way it's partly why you always see those arguments about how Nintendo will never die. Pokemon in itself is a multi-billion dollar industry that doesn't NEED a Nintendo system to survive as it could live on as software on another device, and then the TV shows just keep compelling those to watch them and in turn buy all the other fluff, not to mention the insane community around that card game.
