Yeah but last I checked nintendo owns the copyrights so yeah that's the only reason why it's still on a nintendo system. Honestly though if you own firered/leafgreen you're not going to miss out on much though. My whole problem with the series though is they did the different versions right once and haven't done it right since so only one version is nesscary. I'm talking RSE, I mean come on, different teams depending on version and pokemon? SIgn me up, but another RBGY style with one team come on...I'll buy one version and maybe the second if I do decide to complete the pokedex but I'd prefer they go back to doing two evil teams, and for the third version add rocket in. Personal preference though. It's definitely fun if you pick the right team but man are some of moves annoying(anything dealing confusion since there's no cure last I checked besides waiting it out, and wrap which yeah you can swap out but it's not the same and I don't want split exp on some of these...). I'm getting close to halfway with the game(with my sporadic playing of it being as I tend to only play at home especially on days off since even though I take the gba with me I forget to use it on breaks/lunch. Though if you go the 3ds route hope you have the charger with you. I don't know how VC titles run the battery but FE fates runs it fast even on standby...

Nintendo doesn't just own the copyrights; it own the IP. Ownership of the Pokemon Company is held in a three-way split between Nintendo, Creature (a second party Nintendo developer that has literally never made anything on a non-Nintendo platform), and Game Freak (an almost-second party developer for Nintendo which very rarely develops games for non-Nintendo platforms).

Pokemon is pretty much Nintendo's biggest cash cow; someone would have to pry it from their cold, dead fingers.

If Nintendo even hinted a sniff of shenanigans I imagine they have a fairly solid contract in place where they could buy a total controlling stake of the other two second parties and put that crap to bed. Pokemon is their safety pillow. If they went belly up with hardware and decided to tank, rather they sully their classic console based IPs, they could live fat off Pokemon going forward. And as such being a leaner company not saddled with hardware, they'd be all the better for it unless people just up and got fed up with Pokemon some decade.

I don't actually know how the shares are split; they may already own the controlling stake of The Pokemon Company. All I know is that ownership is split between those three, but I have no clue how, specifically, it's split.
