Retro Arcade Sticks for Wii

by kidsampson Fri Sep 18, 2015 12:53 pm

I'm considering buying an arcade stick for the Wii. My hope is to find a solution compatible with Virtual Console titles and emulators for Neo Geo VC titles and other arcade games through Retroarch / MAME.

Beyond the Wii sticks made by Hori and Madcatz, has anyone used any other alternatives?

I have a NES/SNES mayflash adapter that plugs into the Wii remote. This is how I connect my official NES and SNES controllers, and they work well. I'm wondering if these would also support arcade sticks.

I also have some NES retroport adapters than plug directly into the Gamecube ports.

Basically, I'm looking for two pieces of advice. It would be great if someone has tried the same and can confirm that NES or SNES sticks work through the adapters. I am also interested in knowing whether any NES or SNES sticks are actually worth purchasing or if I should just go with the Wii ones or find a PS/2 stick with yet another adapter.

Any newer stick will have better components than a NES/SNES stick. The Tekken Tag Wiiu stick uses all Sanwa buttons and sticks, and is setup so you can easily replace all the parts if you desire to. I have 1 TTTU stick and 3 Hori Fight STicks, the TTTU is superior in almost every way (the Horis have a trigger system for turbos that the Madcatz stick does not have).

Good to know. Is the Tekken Tag stick just for Wii U? I'm hoping for a solution compatible with the original Wii.

It registers a a classic controller because it plugs in the bottom of a Wiimote so it is Wii compatible. Amazon has a cheap used one at the moment.

A custom or modded arcade stick with a MC Cthulhu PCB would also do the trick. You'd have to make or purchase a GameCube cable for it. I'd highly recommend this route if you are handy with a soldering iron and RJ45 crimpers. It has the potential to work with many consoles which could save you money in the long run.

Thanks for the helpful links. I've done plenty of both system and controller mods in my day, but have never tackled soldering. This gives me a good start on my research.

Can the MC Cthulhu swap from functioning as a stick to a dpad? I looked into them a while ago but I am so terrible at rj45 crimping that I never bought one.

How did you do system and controller mods but not solder?

Not to my knowledge. As far as I know, most retro consoles can't even tell the difference between a stick and a dpad. The Dreamcast and original Xbox might be able to detect it because of no memory card/VMU support.

That would be the only reason to chose the TTTU stick over an MC Cthulhu then. Using a stick for games that dont support dpad movement, like Mario Kart, is actually very handy. Mario Kart is not the best example, but was the first I could think of.
