I could not find a thread on these kind of similar, parallel series of games here on the Nintendo sub-forum.
So here it is!
Honestly, I have only played Super Paper Mario on the Wii (probably my favorite game on the system) but I just got 1000 Year Door for the GCN and really want to dive into it.
How about you guys/gals? Favorites in these two series? Good memories? Anyone excited for Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam?

Thousand Year Door plays very differently from Super Paper Mario. The latter is a platformer with RPG elements, while the former is an RPG with platformer elements.

Re: Mario RPG/Paper Mario Thread
So I have heard. But that's actually why I really want to get into it - as much as I liked SPM (a LOT), I felt like there just wasn't quite enough RPG in it.

If you have a chance I'd try doing the first Paper Mario before Thousand Year Door; it might be hard going back to the original because Thousand Year Door has a myriad of improvements; think of it like how FFIV got refined into FFVI.

Re: Mario RPG/Paper Mario Thread
I put off playing Super Mario RPG for a loooong long time, I just didn't think I would like it. Man was I wrong. I didn't expect to laugh that much. Plus, the timing based combat system is a nice change of pace from the rest of the RPG genre on SNES.
Re: Mario RPG/Paper Mario Thread
Mario transforming into various characters to describe what's going on is the best part. It has a good successor in Mario & Luigi with the Italian sounding gibberish instead of them actually talking.

Yes! That still kills me. I love that game

Yeah, I got sucked into Mario RPG in the summer of 96. Got it for Christmas and the official Nintendo guide too.
ContinueQuest is currently playing it in small bits, check out the first episode here.

I love Mario RPG alot. I never could get into Paper Mario, because it changed from the original so much. However, I will be playing through Paper Mario as soon as my Blissbox comes in. I have ignored the game long enough.

It's really great. I enjoyed Super Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door - which are both gogeous games - but the original is still my favorite game in the series.
