Yeah agreed. They're certainly not in the same category as Sachen, Wisdom Tree, etc....
And damn I had forgotten about Stadium Events. That's a toughie.

Re: Actually going to try for complete licensed NES set
I had this goal once upon a time... Only for the SNES. Always been my favourite console and for about an hour or two I was totally pumped for my new found collecting goal. Then I saw the outrageously insane prices most of the carts were going for these days. I quickly lost my appetite and my new goal became selling my SNES carts for $$.
Good on you though! Will be interesting to hear updates as you go along on this journey. At least I can live vicariously through you.

With the roughly 200 I have, I'm at 1/4th of the way before I start. The good news is, the number of >$100 games on the NES is relatively low when you're looking cart only. There's still too many, but compared to SNES I'm good, it seems slightly past its peak prices.
I have been trying to collect a complete NES set (licensed and unlicensed) for years. I was acquiring a lot of games very quickly, but I have slowed down a lot recently. The games I still need are:
I recognize that I will probably never be willing to pay the market price for some of these games, however. (Hopefully, I will find them "in the wild"... )
I am happy to help if you have any questions about NES collecting, and I agree that you should try to get all of the Tengen games. They are very good, and acquiring a complete set will not be terribly expensive.
Finally, you should decide early on whether you want to collect label variants. I collect "major" label variants (i.e., Gun.Smoke, Untouchables, etc.), but I have no interest in collecting games with differently shaped seals of quality.

Based on your post, I decided to bite the bullet and buy all of these games. They are not terribly expensive, and despite the fact I collect "cart only" games, I just ordered all seven of them for $75 shipped off of eBay.

What about 3 screw vs. 5 screw?
Or do the screws always correlate directly with a certain seal shape?
NES variants are numerous. I think Atari is even nuttier though - text labels, picture labels, blue labels, red labels, misprinted labels, and so on.

I don't worry about that...

Don't forget Sears labels! (...and the Sears text labels...and the sears picture labels...)
2600 labels are nuts, and you can really go down the rabbit hole collecting variants for that system. (Thankfully, I am only going a little way down the rabbit hole...)

Don't forget the most common Atari 2600 label variant of all, the Activision "We used crappy glue and now they're all stained and falling off" variant.

Re: Actually going to try for complete licensed NES set
I do know a lot of people don't consider Stadium Events part of the full set due to the fact that it was a recalled game and not really on store shelves, that does make gettings a "full set" a lot more feasible.

Activision's got nothing on Parker Bros. in that regard...and the Activision blue labels and white labels never seem to have any problems.

I will probably just get a clearly marked repro when I get to that point. I plan on doing the same thing for the World Championship cartriges.

I think that's a good move. World Championship wasn't a retail game and you can debate Stadium Events due to the recall.
That still leaves some doozies like Little Samson but at least they're not tens of thousands of dollars doozies.
