Why not put a barrel connector on the cable to the machine? That way you never remove the cable, pins are secure, and when you need to plug it into a tv, you use a cheaper standard svideo cable.

It technically can degrade the image, but it is likely not noticeable by most people.

This was my thought on the S-video/composite cables, but it may depend on the Tv or monitor you are using as to what signal it defaults to. Not sure.

Anyway I was lazy and did not want to sift through cheaper cables on the off chances one was good so I sprung for a official Nintendo s-video cable. Cost $30 with shipping included from Japan. A bit pricey but after I researched going RGB, I felt $30 was a cheaper alternative.
