I came home from work today to find it'd arrived :D

It's the first Mario Kart game I've bought since Double Dash.

Posted this in the Wii U thread too. Attention those who have received Mario Kart 8 early, don't register your copy yet, otherwise you won't get your free game!

My copy had arrived already today too. Played through all 8 cups. It's pretty awesome.

I love how the items have been toned back a lot - it feels like clever racing makes a bigger difference now. You can still be screwed over last lap, but it happens much less than other recent games in the series, and significantly less than the godawful wii version.

Haven't decided on a character I like best yet. Weirdly I like the heavyweight and cruiserweights but also the featherweights.

I'll probably go forn a heavyweight overall because if people are gonna be barging others out of the way, I want to be the one doing the barging.

Loving the graphics and smooth fps, played the first 4 cups on 100cc with Wario.

Only thing im not liking is not being able to hold an item behind the kart and still get another item, but thats a minor issue.

Maybe I'm in the minority but that's a disappointment, I enjoyed that aspect in MK7

MK7? Hasn't this been the case with Mario Kart since...forever?

You couldnt drag items in all of them. The SNES and Gamecube didn't have it for sure. Not sure about N64 (I think you could?)

I don't mind this change. It stops you hoarding items, and the amount of red shells and such coming at you in this one is low enough that not being to hoard 2 green shell shields isn't so bad at all.

It's not that useful here anyway. A lot of the items can break through a shield like that anyway - bob-ombs, piranha plants, boomerangs and fire flowers have no issues breaking through a green shell shield.

I only played through the mushroom cup last night. What's everyone's thoughts on the game so far in comparison to the rest of the series? It seems pretty solid to me and it feels fairer and more balanced than the Wii game. I also really liked all the short cuts and different routes I could see. I didn't really enjoy the water of gliding parts though. Maybe they'll grow on me.

You could in DS and Wii so I thought it was an old feature....we are talking about bananas and shells right? (and bob ombs, though honestly I have no idea why anyone would think it's a good idea to have a boss handing from your ass so everyone can blow you up)

The gliding parts offer an interesting distraction, and the water parts just suck...at least that's the case with MK7

I think Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed did it better with the flying and boat sections.
