My personal "holy grail" of snes collecting.

Hey guys,

I thought i'd start a thread to brag about my new acquisition I just received in the mail, haha: A CIB copy of Zombies ate my Neighbors with the rare box variant.

Image

I saw this a few years ago on eBay, however it had a ridiculous BIN price of $500 and it wasn't in the best of shape. At the time I didn't realize it was that rare, and the condition was so terrible that I completely passed on it. However immediately I knew I had to some day find a copy of it to own. I instantly fell in love with that box art. Something about it just screams retro and awesome to me, haha.

I finally had the chance to pick one up after all these years. The price was pretty steep, but given it's the best condition one i've ever seen, and the fact I know how rare it is and that I paid the going price for it, i'm so happy. Admittedly it's the most i've ever paid for a game, but this is literally the holy grail of my collection. I have other more rare things, but this is now my most coveted piece in my collection, solely based on how awesome I find that artwork.

Anyways, just wanted to share it with you guys! Enjoy!

Oh I also splurged a bit and bought a VGA UV protected acrylic case for it. That was expensive, but I figure it's worth the investment to keep this thing in the best shape possible.

Edit: Oh also, I figured I should give some backstory of this one for those who haven't seen it before. This was a later release for the game. There is a lot of speculation as to the origins of it, but none are concrete. Some of theories are it was a Mexican-only release (it says Made in Mexico on the back), and the one that I believe to hold the most credibility, is after the ESRB was formed they released this boxart to reflect the new grading. My favourite theory though (but I don't believe it at all) was that they originally wanted The Offspring to do the soundtrack for the game, and the kid on the front cover is supposed to be Dexter, the singer of the band. Haha, I always get a kick out of that theory.

Uh...didn't we just have a thread where you were highly critical of VGA?

That said, that is some nice box art. And Zombies Ate My Neighbors is such an awesome game.

Haha, I was wondering if that would come up. I was never critical of VGA though, only for the practice that resellers use it to inflate the prices of games. I hold no false beliefs that VGA are to blame for that. Also, I did mention that using VGA for the sole purpose of getting your games graded for your personal collection (not to just resell immediately after) was something I see beneficial. Lastly, this one isn't using VGA's grading services, which was the specific topic of that thread. I only bought one of their cases for preservation of the box.

So yeah, I have no qualms with VGA or their services, only the practice with which most resellers use it for.

Ah, cool. I hope you don't think I was trying to knock your find. I think it's really cool and was completely unaware of the alternate artwork.

Not a problem, Ack! I appreciate you letting me clarify that a bit more. I felt like some people in that other thread believed I was attacking VGA, which I wasn't.

Anywho, glad you like the boxart! :D

Nice get and looks to be in super shape.

SNES / N64 cart and box variants are becoming harder and harder to find.

The Tarzan / Rampage and Glover box variants for N64 are ones i'm seeking, so I know the enjoyment of finding a good one in good shape.

I'd lean toward the re-release mexico theory. I know that many of the re-releases in mexico had minor variants. Most are simple things like black and white manuals instead of color, and muted color patterns on boxes, but entirely new design variants are a variant that is cool and collectible.

Very cool find! When I was a kid I probably would have been scared by that zombie. Does the cartridge and manual have that artwork as well?

Unfortunately both the cart and manual are the same as the original artwork:

It's a shame, I would have loved if the cart and manual had the same as the box art, though it wasn't released like that :(.

Although, another cool thing I dug up was that the original box art, pictured above in the instructions image, was taken from the original Night of the Living Dead film. So cool!

You can clearly see the two guys on the right side, as well as the girl on the far left. I still haven't figured out where the scared human woman is from.

Wow!

As someone who's been squirting zombies since the day this game came out, I'm pretty excited to see this version, and in such good shape! Jelly! I've got my original SNES CIB displayed on a shelf because I've always loved the horror/slasher influences the game's art has. The Night of the Living Dead still is a nice find! And I'm pretty sure I've seen the screaming woman on an old 50's film advertisement (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman or something?). Anyway, this alternate box's art, especially the zombie, is F-ing amazing! I love it! Thanks for sharing!
