The spray is good for hard to reach locations, or getting inside connection or switches, but for PCB work it's too messy. A bottle of alcohol and a toothbrush (or ESD anti static brushes if you want to be fancy) will get you better results. You usually need a brush to scrub off flux residue, or kimwipes or something.
Well, alcohol IS one of the primary ingredients in Electric Contact Cleaner, so the two aren't so terribly different. I use the little red straw that's included with the can to minimize my mess. Just use what works for you, right? Reminds me of that dumb old joke: Do you prefer belt or suspenders? Whichever keeps my pants from falling off my butt!

A toothbrush is a good idea. Those always come in handy for cleaning.
