Is this screen rot? Dead Pixels? If not what is it?

Post by Betagam7 »

So a while ago a user on this forum helped me obtain a second Mega Duck hadnheld due to what looked like screen rot or dying pixels occuring in the original.

Well the old system still has the same issue...only the position of the "rot" has changed and the previously affected area has come back!

This has led me to question what exactly is wrong with the screen. I've seen this kind of wibbly line appear on old Gameboy's before and while I heard that it spread I didn't expect it to move entirely!

Can anyone look at the three photos below, taken several months apart from the same unit and tell me what exactly is that thing under the screen? Clearly the pixels aren't permanently dead but whatever that brown thing is covers them in some weird random pattern that seems different every time I take it out of the cupboard.

That is strange. Not dead pixels since the pattern tends to appear in different spots. Still, the LCD is the problem and not the game itself. Confirm this by trying different game carts. You could try taking it apart and check the LCD "sandwich" connections between the PCB.

The random wibbly line is present even when the system is turned off, so it is nothing to do with what game is inserted. It doesn't noticeably change in front of your eyes, I'll just take it out of the cupboard and it will look different. It first appeared directly after the machine fell on the floor.

The Mega Duck has two screens which lets it simulate parallax scrolling. I don't know if that is relevant or not...
