Crackling noise when playing PS1 games on PS2.

by 3DSStrider Tue Aug 30, 2016 5:42 pm

Whenever I play a PS1 game on my fat PS2, it makes painful crackling noises. This effects certain sounds like the voice acting in Mega Man Legends or the music in Tekken 3. PS2 games work fine. At first I thought it might be an issue reading CD's but PS2 games on CD like the original Timesplitters work fine, though I haven't tried audio CD's. The PS1 games do not have this issue when played on my PS3 so it is the PS2's problem.

The crackling noise is coming through the TV speakers, and not the PS2 console itself?

You might have already thought of this, but, are any of the games on this list?

Yes, the TV is giving me the crackling noises. I've used two different AV cables and gotten the same result so it's not that.

I don't own any of the games on the incompatibility list. The games I've tried since the crackling started were Mega Man Legends, Resident Evil, Ehrgeiz, and Tekken 3.

There's a couple of options in the PS2 menu for playing PS1 games. IIRC, they have something to do with compatibility. You can try changing those settings and seeing if that helps.

Where are they? I found some video options but fiddling with them did nothing to help.

Are you using optical audio? Or if not, do you have a way to try it?
Switching audio output might narrow down the issue.

There was an optical video option but I didn't see an optical audio option. I attempted to play Resident Evil with it on and off, and encountered the noise on both attempts.

The TOSLINK optical connector is audio only. Which cable/connector type are you using to hook up your system?

Do you mean "Component Video Out" in the PS2's system menu?
That option switches the video output between YPbPr (component & d-terminal) or RGB (SCART & JP21). Won't affect audio, RF, composite, or s-video.

What I was referring to is called "Digital Out (Optical)". It enables or disables the PS2's TOSLINK socket.
