I think, to a fair point, that's simply been sensationalized...though the implementation does remain to be seen. Either way, hardware support only tends to extend back so far. Modern GPU drivers are largely Windows 7 and up at this point, for example. So, the consumer experience may not change that much. At worst, it becomes the Apple user experience.
Personally, I don't see an annual fee for the OS, mostly because nobody else is doing it.
