JVC TM-910SU - Composite w/ SNES?

Post by hking0036 »

My brother picked one of these guys up for me because they were about to dump it at work and he knows I already have a professional monitor. I got some pictures and I saw that it evidently can't do RGB, but I still took it because I figured it would be convenient to have, and hey, it still has S-Video so I could just get a cable. Unfortunately, using my BNC adapters with the SNES composite cables has provided nothing. I'm considering that it may be a weird issue with the Ext. Sync bnc input on the back(?). When I hook it up, I can get sound out but no video, so I've got no idea as to what it could be. Any advice would be appreciated! :D

I found a manual and a brochure but they don't give a whole lot of indication: http://pro.jvc.com/pro/attributes/monit ... -910SU.pdf
http://pro.jvc.com/pro/attributes/monit ... 910su1.pdf
I can provide some pictures if needed but the pdfs should cover the important stuff.

Did you make sure the Ext Sync and NTSC/PAL buttons on the front are not pushed in? Did you try flipping the AFC switch on the back? Are you using the Video A/B switch to select the right input?

100% sure it's on NTSC w/o external sync. Flipping the AFC switch to fast from normal didn't get me anything, and I'm sure I'm on input A. I've also tried using one of the RCAs with a BNC adapter for ext. sync but that didn't seem to work either (it may be dumb to say considering how composite works but I thought it was worth a shot). Tried with my normal BNC connectors on a lark (just red for the input) and still nothing, even w/ ext. sync.

Have you tried both A and B inputs? Just in case one of them is somehow dead.

You wont be able to input RGB any way I can see.

I noticed in the specs that it says both composite inputs expect "negative sync". I never realized there was polarity in sync signals before now. If you have a Y cable, you could try splitting the composite signal into one of the composite inputs as well as the Ext. Sync input. Some devices can use composite video for composite sync, so it's worth a try. Just be sure to flip the Ext. Sync switch.

I have no idea if it's a sync problem or not, but you say you get NO picture. At least with a sync issue you would get SOME sort of picture on the screen, even if it was bouncing all around. But, maybe not if the monitor is "smart" and doesn't display a picture if it can't sync.

If you have S-Video cables for anything, I would suggest trying that too.

Yeah I'm not seeing RGB happening, I just wanted to see if I could get something with a Sync BNC in. Unfortunately I have neither a Y-Cable nor an S-Video cable. Never heard of 'negative sync' before, this is all over my head.

Absolutely 0 picture though, I can get audio out but that's not incredibly helpful to say the least. Just checked input B, no dice.

Uhh you're not going to get any kind of picture with just a sync signal. Just plug the composite video jack into either Input A or B and you'll have composite video.

He said in the first post that he was using SNES composite cables.

I know that, it sounded like he was plugging the composite video cable into the sync input on the monitor which doesn't work.

Myself I'd try s-video and save the trouble. It needs no adapter.

According to the manual you can even directly hook up a PAL SNES. Might be useful for something, huh? :)

I figured as much, I was just trying to get anything out of it using my SCART -> BNC with one of the R/G/B ones hooked up to see if it needed external sync. Regardless, if I plug in the composite video to the video in I get nothing at all. Same for input B as well.

Could be useful for PAL games through the SD2SNES, but if I can't get anything at all then there's some other concerns, first
