There is a resistor which is needed in the AV cable connecting 36ohm resistor from composite to ground, that makes the image less bright.
Some say the resistor is 75ohm, well, 75ohm makes the image far too dark, around 36ohm seems ideal from my previous tests. If you have a couple of 75ohm resistors, you could connect them in parallel which would make them around 36ohms, which is near enough.
The cable you probably had originally didn't have the resistor hence why the image was too bright and washed out.
