PS2 Phat Question

Post by SpaceBooger »

A friend gave me a PS2 Phat. I have a slim, but want to set up the phat because of how it looks.

My slim boots directly to games if a disc is installed. This phat one always boots to the Browser/System menu and I have to select the game disc from the browser menu.

Is this normal?
Can I get it to boot discs directly or am I just spoiled by the PS2 Slim?

My Fat PS2 goes right to load disc if it is already in the reader upon powerup. If you want to try a new game disc, try hitting the eject button instead of the soft power button and be sure to place the disc and close the tray right away.

That fat PS2 is perfect for the HDAdvance-HDLoader-OpenLoader hard drive game install route.

So, I figured out that if I hold the circle button when powering the system on it will boot to the disc. If I hold any other button down it goes to the browser screen.

You have a hacked system or something (I forget what Free Mcboot does).
PS2 cannot be prevented in the settings menu, from automatically attempting to load the inserted disc upon boot or reset.

Has to do with a .CNF file loaded by FMCB I think. It is an editable text file that chooses which programs are listed in the browser, what the default behavior on boot is and what holding down buttons does on boot.
I suspect somewhere in your .CNF it has the setting AutoBoot_Disc = 0
You can copy it to a thumb-drive from the PS2 to edit it on your PC, or run a "Configurator" program/elf on the PS2 to modify it via a GUI. - you can burn a disc with the configurator and boot it to do the modification. (maybe watch some youtube vids or something, I was rather confused when I first tried it...)

some examples of different CNFs here:

Thanks!

I was thinking it may be hacked, but I tried all the ways to boot into a hacked menu and it didn't work (I tried holding down each button and even combinations of buttons - that is how I found that games load if I hold the circle button).
I did try to boot a copied game and got the red screen telling me to load a proper PS2 or PSOne disc.

Any suggestion on what I should try next?

Power off PS2, remove all memory cards from PS2, put game disc in PS2, power on PS2, now see if it will boot a disc directly without you holding any buttons down. Let us know the outcome sans memory cards.
