Cant' Recover Xbox Live Gamertag...

Well, About two days ago I got hit with the ban hammer from Microsoft on my used xbox. Now I have my brothers 360 with original HDD and my usual setup. For some reason, I cannot for the life of me recover my gamertag. I've tried it all, but nothing works. I'm not using any corrupted components, and whenever I try to recover it it gives me a message that "your HDD isn't inserted properly or doesn't have enough space". When you take the HDD out of this 360 and put it in another, the gamertag is there. I'm not sure, WHAT'S going on. Any help or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

I heard that Microsoft also corrupts your Gamertag when they ban you. Sorry man.

Yeah, I thought of that, but yesterday I did the same routine - and it recovered my gamertag. When I took the HDD out and put it back in, my gamertag was gone and I couldn't recover it. Even after the ban it worked. Hopefully this isn't some late reaction after the ban to corrupt the gamertag...this problem has confused the shit out of me.

Try a format on the HDD, though I had heard the same as 7K about the tags then being corrupt.

A friend of mine bought their machine second hand, never played a pirated game didn't even know the machine was flashed and got a ban... He's so unhappy about it. Modern Warfare 2 bought and paid for and he can't get the best out of it, shame they had to be so widespread with the bans couldn't they have just detected pirate copies being played rather than looking for mods the end user might not know where there.
