Racket-folk! I know it's an impossible task, but rank your top ten Genesis/Mega Drive games. No honorable mentions, please. Embrace the pain of leaving something out.

After much deliberation, I have (probably) settled on:

  1. Monster World IV
  2. Light Crusader
  3. Contra: Hard Corps
  4. Rocket Knight Adventures
  5. Surging Aura
  6. Rockman Mega World
  7. Ranger X
  8. Rent a Hero
  9. Ristar
  10. Crusader of Centy

The scary thing to think about is the number of games that could potentially be on this list that I still haven't played.

Also, here's a fun nostalgia read of an in-progress, top 200, community generated list: https://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36432&p=574327&hilit=top+genesis#p574327

Can I just put Weaponlord ten times?

I kid, but I think it's tough to put such a list together with so many good games.

2. Streets of Rage 2
3. Phantasy Star IV
4. Pirates! Gold
5. Shining Force
6. Shadowrun
7. Gunstar Heroes
8. Desert Strike/jungle Strike
9. Buck Rogers
10. Gain Ground

No, but you can have Ballz 3D followed by Weaponlord nine times.

I am intrigued. Is Buck Rogers that good, or is there some nostalgia tied to it for you, mustang? Also, I really need to play the Genesis version of Shadowrun at some point.

It's much more of a deep cut for an RPG enthusiast. Buck Rogers is something that would get passed over by most folks, but if you get into it, it's worth it.

I guess I will give the list a try:

1. Streets of Rage 2
2. Shining Force 2
3. Phantasy Star IV
4. Castlevania: Bloodlines
5. Comix Zone
6. Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
7. Splatterhouse 3
8. Gain Ground
9. Flicky
10. Golden Axe II

I was never heavy into the Genesis, so most of these are probably obvious choices or oddballs based on my tastes.

Are there even ten good games for the Sega Genesis???...<runs for cover>

In alphabetical order:

Atomic Robo-Kid
Castlevania Bloodlines
Gunstar Heroes
NHL ‘94
Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Streets of Rage 2
Super Fantasy Zone
Thunder Force III
Wonder Boy in Monster World

Of these, Gunstar Heroes is easily the very best, and it is the only Genesis game I have ever truly loved. Admittedly, however, there are a lot of games for the system (e.g., Herzog Zwei, PSIV, Ristar, etc.) that I haven’t really played enough to appreciate.

5. Gunstar Heroes

So many Genesis games I still need to get around to playing.

Moonwalker is such a bold choice. I have played that one. Curious why you listed it.

It's not for the gameplay i assure you, it's purely the music, aesthetics and just plain fun of beating up people with dance as Michael Jackson. I always have a huge grin on my face when I play this game, and it's so short that the charm doesn't wear off as you play through it.

It's interesting to me to see where we overlap and yet note the individual differences in each person's list based on personal preferences.
