Am I crazy or was there some sort of adapter to let you play Master System games on the Game Gear? In all honesty I think there was. Obscure as hell but I'm thinking I had it (I had all the Sega stuff for better or worse).

EDIT: The MasterGear Converter. Dunno where the hell you'd find it but there must be one out there.....

Some Master System games I enjoyed that I don't think were mentioned:

Shinobi
Time Soldiers
Alien Syndrome

On a related aside, Shinobi for the Game Gear is also quite good.

In response to this, from what I've seen, if it's on both, get the master system version.

The game gear ports generally have a zoomed in aspect ratio that can really hurt the game as it means you dont have much time to react to upcoming enemies or obstacles. This is especially true of the game gear sonics :p

Probably the only exception to the "get the SMS version" response is GG Shinobi. That was a totally unique game, and considered one of the better GG titles around.

I had a whole mess of GG games when I was a kid. Some of my favorites were dr. Robotniks mean bean machine, Shinobi, Sonic 2 and this power rangers fighting game where you fought with the zords. It was the most bad ass fighter on a handheld ever. I don't remember which one it was as there were a couple and im at work and cant really search for it.

Asterix and the secret mission
Aztec Adventure
Castle of Illusion
Land of Illusion
Donald Duck in the Lucky Dime Caper

I think there might be a version of Baku Baku Animal on it too, but i can't vouch for it either way.

Don't forget Y's Book 1. Very fun...not as pretty as the TG-16 version but harder and just as much fun.

At least a couple did have re-drawn graphics. I know Dragon Crystal did. Speaking of which, that's a pretty neat game, if you like rogue-likes.

I actually didn't like Golden Axe Warrior, though it's generally held in high regard. Similarly, I can't really recommend the SMS version of Alien Syndrome. I was very unimpressed with it.

The SMS version of Outrun is pretty good, in my opinion. Double Dragon has two-player on the Master System. Star Wars plays identically to, but looks better than the NES version. I've heard good things about SMS Bubble Bobble, but haven't played it. And, as mentioned, the SMS port of R-Type is very impressive. It's probably the SMS game I've played the most.

When I was just a child with so much love for the SMS i used to love Asterix.

It's not that bad if you want a "different" platformer.
