I tend not to like dark themes because there’s always one or two areas where the designers didn’t manage contrast well and I can’t read some critical heading text somewhere. I think I would like dark themes better if most of them didn’t screw that up.

This is pretty cool. I think perhaps a better way to credit the designers at Nintendo under Yokoi would be to say that Yokoi's team invented the modern d-pad. They certainly created the one that inspired so many others via the Famicom controller. But Nintendo definitely didn't originate the core idea.
